Kangaroo court in President's home district orders gangrape for love

), Jan 23: In a shocking incident in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, a 20-year old woman was gangraped by at least 10 men on the orders of a village kangaroo court for having a relationship with a boy of different community.

In the Sabalpur village in Birbhum, the girl's family were asked to pay a huge penalty for the love affair. Unable to do so, the village head or the 'morol' allegedly ordered the gangrape.

The tribal woman lodged an FIR today at the Labhpur police station and was taken to the a hospital in Suri. Authorities say that the girl is critical.

Birbhum is the home district of the President of India Pranab Mukherjee.

"Prima facie, she was gang-raped and we have rounded up 13 persons she had named in the FIR," said the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Prashanta Chowdhury.

Sparking a massive outrage four years ago was an incident in the same district when a teenaged girl was paraded naked for an alleged affair with a boy from a different community.
