Kolkata Doctors Demand Justice for Murdered Colleague at RG Kar Medical College

Protesters from the Abhaya Mancha and the Joint Platform of Doctors in West Bengal began their demonstration after a Calcutta High Court division bench upheld a previous order. This order, dated December 20, allowed doctors to protest, seeking justice for a woman doctor who was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The protest took place about 50 feet from Dorina Crossing at Esplanade in central Kolkata.

Doctors Protest for Justice in Kolkata

The protesters are determined to continue their fight until justice is served. "We will not stop till justice is delivered. Tomorrow around 8 PM, we will light candles and take a vow to continue our fight for our sister Abhaya," one of the protesting doctors stated. This highlights their commitment to seeking justice for their colleague.

Legal Proceedings and Court Observations

Earlier in the day, the court described the incident at RG Kar as "unprecedented, unimaginable and horrible." The state had appealed to the division bench against Justice Tirthankar Ghosh's single bench order. This order allowed the Joint Forum of Doctors to hold a sit-in near Dorina Crossing at Esplanade from December 20-26.

The body of the woman doctor was discovered by police inside RG Kar hospital on August 9. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has since filed a charge-sheet against Sanjay Roy, who is accused of her rape and murder. Roy was working as a civic volunteer with the local police at the time of the crime.

Details of the Crime

According to the CBI's charge-sheet, Roy allegedly committed the crime while the victim was resting in the hospital's seminar room during a break. This charge-sheet was submitted to a special CBI court, outlining Roy's alleged actions on that tragic day.

The ongoing protests and legal proceedings underscore the gravity of this case. The medical community and others are rallying for justice, ensuring that such incidents do not go unnoticed or unpunished.
