Supreme Court judge Justice Vikram Nath recently highlighted the enduring influence of former law minister Ashoke Kumar Sen on the judiciary. Speaking at the A K Sen Memorial Lecture, Justice Nath praised Sen's calm leadership and dedication to legal reform. He noted that Sen's approach to law and governance offers valuable lessons for judges today, emphasising clarity and respect in judicial decisions.

Justice Nath pointed out that Sen's methods strengthened the justice system from its very foundation. He believed that justice starts with the initial complaint and extends through every stage, including police interactions, magistrate hearings, and trial court proceedings. According to Justice Nath, if any part of this chain fails, citizens can feel disconnected from justice.

Legal Reforms and Challenges

Justice Nath also discussed the significant legal reforms initiated by A K Sen, particularly the Advocates Act of 1961. This act modernised the legal profession by creating a single class of advocates and establishing state bar councils. It aimed to democratise opportunities within the legal field by focusing on talent rather than titles.

The Supreme Court judge acknowledged the new challenges facing the legal system today. These include issues related to data protection, digital speech, fair markets, environmental sustainability, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
