Jharkhand High Court Directs State Government to Address PLFI Chief Dinesh Gope's Medical Treatment

The Jharkhand High Court has instructed the state government to submit an affidavit detailing measures to transfer Dinesh Gope, the PLFI chief, to AIIMS for medical treatment. Gope was apprehended by the NIA in New Delhi in May 2023 after evading capture for nearly two decades. Currently, he is held at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Hotwar.

Jharkhand HC Orders Action on PLFI Chiefs Treatment

Gope, who hails from Khunti district, faces over 100 criminal charges across Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha. These charges include murder, abduction, extortion, and raising funds for the PLFI, a faction of the CPI Maoist that formed in 2007. The NIA had previously offered a reward of Rs 5 lakh for information leading to his capture, while the Jharkhand government had announced a Rs 25 lakh reward.

Medical Complications and Legal Proceedings

Gope sustained a hand injury requiring surgery, which later led to complications. He was subsequently evaluated by a medical board at RIMS, the state's top health institute. The board recommended advanced treatment at AIIMS. Despite this recommendation, the government has yet to facilitate his transfer to AIIMS, prompting Gope to petition the high court.

The NIA has filed charges against Gope in connection with the seizure of demonetised currency worth Rs 25.38 lakhs from PLFI members. This case is one of two being investigated by the NIA involving Gope. The high court is set to revisit this matter next week.

Background and Criminal Activities

Gope's criminal activities span several states and involve serious offenses such as murder and extortion. His involvement with PLFI has been significant since its inception in 2007. The group is known for its violent activities and fundraising efforts through illegal means.

The legal proceedings continue as authorities work on addressing Gope's medical needs while ensuring justice is served for his alleged crimes. The high court's directive aims to ensure that Gope receives necessary medical attention without delay.
