J-K Congress Urges Meeting with Lieutenant Governor to Address Katra Shutdown and Detentions

The Congress party has raised concerns about the treatment of leaders detained for opposing the proposed ropeway in Katra. They have requested a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to address these issues. The protest against the ropeway in Jammu and Kashmir's Reasi district continued for the sixth day, with youth activists on hunger strike demanding the release of those detained on December 25.

Congress Seeks Meeting on Katra Shutdown

On December 25, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti initiated a shutdown, halting all activities in Katra town. This town serves as the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi temple. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board had previously paused a Rs 250-crore passenger ropeway project due to similar protests but recently decided to proceed with it.

Congress Seeks Urgent Meeting

The Congress party has formally requested an urgent meeting with Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. They aim to discuss the situation in Katra and express their concerns about the ongoing detention and alleged mistreatment of leaders. These leaders are reportedly held in overcrowded and unhygienic conditions, according to a party statement.

An urgent meeting of Congress's senior leadership was convened in Jammu, led by Jammu and Kashmir chief Tariq Hameed Karra. The meeting focused on the current situation, including the detention of political and trade leaders supporting the protest. Concerns were raised about reports of ill-treatment faced by these detained leaders.

Detained Leaders' Conditions

The Congress claims that detained leaders are being treated like criminals despite their roles as political and trade representatives. These individuals are fighting for thousands affected by the issue, which also involves religious sentiments. The party intends to send a delegation to Katra to meet with locals, families of detained leaders, and the leaders themselves.

The party has communicated its concerns to Lieutenant Governor Sinha through a formal letter sent on Monday. They seek an early meeting to discuss both the current situation and the demands of protesters. The Congress is determined to address these issues and ensure fair treatment for those involved in the agitation.
