Palestinian Envoy Calls for International Community to Ensure Implementation of Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Details

A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began on Sunday. Abed Elrazeg Abu Jazer, the chargé d’affaires of the Palestine Embassy in India, called for global support to ensure the agreement's full implementation. He also requested India's help in rebuilding Gaza. "The deal involves numerous technical details that are complex and challenging. It requires not only a follow-up by the Trump administration or the UN but also by all the powerful countries around the world," Abu Jazer stated.

Palestinian Envoy Urges Action on Ceasefire

The ceasefire and hostage-release agreement follows 15 months of conflict, initiated by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. This deal aims to halt the ongoing war in Gaza and secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. The envoy highlighted India's historical role in providing humanitarian aid globally, expressing hope for India's involvement in Gaza's reconstruction efforts.

International Mediation and Phased Agreement

The ceasefire deal was mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US. It will unfold over three stages in six weeks. More than 700 Palestinian prisoners, some held for over 40 years, will be released. Currently, over 5,000 Palestinians remain in Israeli prisons, according to Abu Jazer. The envoy expressed doubts about lasting peace without a political resolution.

Abu Jazer emphasised that issues extend beyond Gaza to all Palestinian areas like East Jerusalem and the West Bank. He argued that establishing an independent Palestinian state based on 1967 borders is crucial for peace. "Without a political solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders as stipulated by international law, any other measures are insignificant in comparison. This is the core issue," he said.

India's Role and Humanitarian Efforts

Abu Jazer urged India to assist with medical aid, hospitals, schools, and essential food supplies for Gaza's reconstruction. "Throughout history, we have found India always giving humanitarian support in many different places around the world. They have the experience and are leading in this," he noted.

Reuven Azar, Israel’s Ambassador to India, commented on the ceasefire's potential to return Israeli hostages and prevent future attacks like those on October 7. "Peace won't prevail if Hamas is allowed to rearm and regroup," Azar warned. He also acknowledged India's support for Israel's right to self-defence.

Challenges Ahead for Lasting Peace

Azar highlighted ongoing threats from Iran but noted changes in regional dynamics with Iran losing influence in Lebanon, Syria, and Gaza. He stressed international pressure could curb Iran's nuclear ambitions. "With enough international pressure, we can make sure it stops its quest for nuclear weapons," Azar stated.

The second phase of negotiations will start sixteen days after the deal's implementation to release more hostages. The third phase will focus on Gaza's reconstruction, which may take several years to complete.

The ceasefire marks a significant step towards peace but highlights challenges ahead without a political solution for Palestinians' broader issues. Both sides acknowledge international involvement as crucial for lasting peace in the region.
