IRCTC Website and App Down? Passengers Face Booking Problems Ahead Of Diwali And Chhath Puja

Many users faced difficulties accessing the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website while trying to book train tickets for Diwali and Chhath Puja. Downdetector reported that 48% of users encountered issues with the website, 37% had trouble with the mobile app, and 14% struggled during ticket booking. Screenshots shared online showed a message stating that booking and cancellation services would be unavailable for an hour.

Social media was abuzz with users sharing their frustrations about the IRCTC website's downtime. The displayed message apologised for the inconvenience and advised contacting customer care for cancellations or filing TDRs. This disruption came at a time when many were eager to secure their travel plans for upcoming festivals.

New IRCTC Rules Announced

In a significant update, starting January 2026, passengers can change travel dates on confirmed tickets without incurring cancellation fees. This decision aims to replace what has been criticised as an "unfair" system with a more passenger-friendly approach. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasised that this change is in the interest of passengers.

The Railways Minister clarified that altering travel dates won't ensure a confirmed seat, as it depends on availability. If the fare for the new date is higher, passengers must pay the difference. This policy shift is expected to offer more flexibility to travellers planning their journeys.

Current Cancellation Policies

Currently, if a confirmed ticket is cancelled between 48 and 12 hours before departure, 25% of the fare is deducted as a cancellation fee. This deduction increases if cancellations occur within 12 to 4 hours of departure. Once the reservation chart is prepared, no refund is provided.

The recent announcement by the government aims to alleviate some of these financial burdens on passengers by allowing date changes without penalties. However, travellers should be aware that seat availability remains a crucial factor in securing new travel dates.

This development reflects ongoing efforts to make railway services more accommodating and responsive to passenger needs. As these changes take effect in 2026, they are expected to enhance the overall travel experience for many railway users across India.
