Indira Gandhi Peace Prize 2023 Awarded to Barenboim and Awwad for Promoting Israel-Palestine Amity Through Music
The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development for 2023 was awarded to Daniel Barenboim and Ali Abu Awwad. They have devoted their lives to fostering harmony between Israelis and Palestinians using music, dialogue, and community involvement. The award was announced on Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary during a virtual ceremony.

The selection of the awardees was made by a prestigious jury led by former Chief Justice of India T S Thakur. The virtual event saw participation from Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson of the Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust, former Vice President M Hamid Ansari, and Shivshankar Menon, the current head of the jury. Justice T S Thakur and Mariam C. Said, who accepted the award on behalf of Daniel Barenboim, were also present.
Prominent Figures in Music and Peace Activism
Daniel Barenboim, originally from Argentina, is a celebrated classical pianist and conductor. He has performed with some of the world's top orchestras. Beyond his musical career, he is recognised for his efforts to promote peace in West Asia through music. Ali Abu Awwad is a notable Palestinian peace activist dedicated to resolving the Middle East conflict peacefully.
During the ceremony, Shivshankar Menon delivered the welcome address while Hamid Ansari presented the award. In his acceptance speech, Ali Abu Awwad shared that he discovered the strength of non-violence during his time in prison. He expressed admiration for Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, stating they inspire him greatly.
Ali Abu Awwad further mentioned that these leaders taught him that humanity lies in recognising and protecting one another. This belief drives his commitment to non-violent solutions in conflict areas. The event highlighted the significant contributions of both awardees towards peace and understanding between communities.
The recognition of Daniel Barenboim and Ali Abu Awwad underscores their impactful work in promoting peace through innovative means. Their dedication serves as an inspiration for others striving for harmony in conflict-ridden regions.
