Indian Railways Reports 9% Annual Growth with 7,134 Coaches Manufactured in 2024-25
Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone in the financial year 2024-25 by manufacturing 7,134 coaches, which is a 9% increase from the previous year, according to the ministry. In 2023-24, the production was 6,541 coaches. This growth highlights India's focus on modernising its Railway infrastructure to accommodate rising passenger needs.

The Indian Railways operates three coach manufacturing units: Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu; Rail Coach Factory (RCF) in Kapurthala, Punjab; and Modern Coach Factory (MCF) in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. These facilities play a crucial role in meeting the production targets set by the ministry.
Focus on Non A/C Coaches
A special emphasis was placed on producing non A/C coaches, with 4,601 units manufactured in 2024-25. This effort aims to cater to the needs of the common man, as stated in a press release. The increased production reflects a strategic move to enhance Railway services for everyday passengers.
The Integral Coach Factory (ICF), a leading passenger coach production unit of Indian Railways, surpassed its previous records by rolling out 3,007 coaches in 2024-25. This achievement underscores ICF's pivotal role in boosting coach production capacity.
Historical Production Trends
Coach production in India has seen substantial growth over the years. From 2004 to 2014, Indian Railways manufactured less than 3,300 coaches annually on average. However, between 2014 and 2024, there was a significant increase with a total of 54,809 coaches produced, averaging 5,481 per year.
This surge aligns with efforts to improve connectivity and promote self-reliance in Railway manufacturing. The ministry highlighted this trend as part of India's broader strategy to enhance its transportation infrastructure.
The emphasis on increasing coach production is part of a larger initiative to modernise and expand India's Railway network. By focusing on both quantity and quality of coaches, Indian Railways aims to provide better services and meet the growing demands of passengers across the country.
