An Indian fishing boat, Marthoma, with 13 crew members, collided with an Indian Navy submarine near Goa. The incident prompted a large-scale search and rescue operation by the Indian Navy. They have deployed six ships and aircraft for the mission. So far, 11 crew members have been saved, but two remain missing.
The collision occurred approximately 70 nautical miles from the Goa coast. The Ministry of Defence confirmed this in an official statement. "Search and rescue efforts for the remaining two are underway and are being coordinated with Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mumbai (MRCC). Additional assets including from the Coast Guard have been diverted to the area to augment the efforts," it stated.

Scorpene-class submarines play a crucial role in India's naval strength within the Indian Ocean. These submarines can perform various missions such as anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying, and area surveillance.
The advanced technology used in Scorpene-class submarines ensures superior stealth capabilities. This includes advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low noise levels, and a hydro-dynamically optimized shape. They can launch precise attacks on enemies using guided weapons.
The submarines can attack using torpedoes or tube-launched anti-ship missiles while submerged or on the surface. This versatility enhances their operational effectiveness in diverse maritime scenarios.
"The cause of the incident is being investigated," added the Ministry of Defence's statement. The investigation aims to uncover how such a collision occurred between two significant maritime vessels.
Efforts continue to locate the missing crew members with coordination from Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Mumbai (MRCC). Additional resources from the Coast Guard have been redirected to support these efforts.
The incident highlights both challenges and capabilities within India's naval operations. It underscores the importance of safety measures and coordination in preventing future occurrences.
