Indian Navy Prevents Suppression of Nations in Indian Ocean Region, Asserts Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasised that the Indian Navy plays a crucial role in ensuring no nation dominates another in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) through economic or military might. His comments came during an event at the Karwar naval base in Karnataka, amidst China's growing military activities in the area. Singh highlighted India's commitment to maintaining peace and security in the maritime domain.

Indian Navy Ensures Fairness in Indian Ocean

Singh inaugurated the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR, which embarked on a nearly month-long mission in the south-west IOR. The ship's crew includes members from India and nine other countries. This initiative reflects India's dedication to collective security and prosperity in the region. Singh praised the Indian Navy for its swift response to incidents like ship hijackings and piracy.

Indian Navy's Role in Regional Security

The Defence Minister stressed that the Indian Navy safeguards not only Indian vessels but also those of other nations. He underscored the importance of free navigation, adherence to international rules, anti-piracy efforts, and maintaining peace and stability in the IOR. Singh noted that India's expanding presence in the region strengthens both national interests and the security of allied nations.

Singh highlighted that India's involvement in the IOR is not solely about national security but also about ensuring equal rights and responsibilities among friendly countries. He stated, "Our navy ensures that, in the Indian Ocean Region, no nation suppresses another on the basis of overwhelming economy and military power." This approach aims to protect nations' interests without compromising their sovereignty.

Strategic Importance of the Indian Ocean Region

The IOR holds significance beyond security concerns, impacting trade, economy, tourism, culture, and overall national interest. Singh emphasised this point while discussing India's strategic goals in the region. He mentioned that with advanced ships, weapons, equipment, and skilled sailors, India is committed to developing the IOR as a symbol of brotherhood and shared interest with other friendly nations.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan and India Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi were present at the event. Singh reiterated India's efforts to make the IOR more peaceful and prosperous through collaboration with various stakeholders. He commended the crew of IOS SAGAR for their role in enhancing regional security.

Commitment to Maritime Excellence

Singh described the crew of IOS SAGAR as heroes who would elevate the ship's status by demonstrating how cooperation can enhance regional security. "Riding on winds of friendship, sails of mutual trust and using compass of cooperation, IOS SAGAR will ensure maritime excellence and greater shared security," he said.

The Defence Minister's remarks underscore India's strategic focus on fostering peace and stability in the IOR while promoting cooperation among nations. The launch of IOS SAGAR signifies a step towards achieving these objectives through collaboration and mutual trust among countries in the region.
