India Now Offers Comprehensive Opportunities for Science and Research, Union Minister Jitendra Singh States

Union Minister Jitendra Singh recently highlighted India's readiness for advancements in science and research. He encouraged Indian researchers abroad to consider returning with clear goals and timelines. Speaking at the 55th foundation day of the Department of Science and Technology, Singh noted that India is experiencing a favourable period for scientific progress, with even better times anticipated.

Indias New Era for Science and Research

Singh emphasised the importance of planning for researchers who are currently overseas. He suggested they should determine how long they intend to stay abroad and set specific objectives for their return. "The message should be that India now has everything to offer when it comes to research and science, and the best will come soon," he stated.

Scientific Ecosystem Transformation

The minister credited a significant shift in mindset as a key factor in transforming India's scientific ecosystem. This change is not limited to government levels but is evident across society. Singh described this transformation as a study field, noting the rise in aspirations everywhere.

He also called for rethinking traditional research approaches, questioning why research should only be industry-led rather than industry-determined. Singh advocated for stronger private partnerships, suggesting collaborations should include equitable financial commitments. "If you invest 50 per cent, make the other party invest 50 or 60 per cent," he proposed.

India's Global Scientific Influence

Reflecting on India's growing global presence, Singh asserted that the country is beginning to influence international geopolitics. "Nobody will like India moving ahead in strides but the very fact that they would think about us or have started thinking about us means we are on the right course," he said.

Singh shared statistics highlighting India's scientific progress over the past decade. He noted that India has moved from being part of the "fragile five" to ranking among the top five globally. The country now ranks third worldwide in startups and has improved its position from 81st to 39th in the Global Innovation Index.

Advancements in Patents and Education

India is also sixth in global patent filings, with 56 per cent of last year's 64,480 patents filed by Indian residents. Singh stated, "This means India has succeeded in creating an ecosystem and infrastructure that no longer needs to be sought outside the country."

The implementation of the National Education Policy 2020 and mission-mode programmes like the National Quantum Mission were cited as contributors to this golden period for science and innovation in India. Singh remarked on the political environment's openness to inputs and patience in listening.

The minister's comments underscore India's commitment to fostering a robust scientific community and infrastructure, aiming for continued growth and influence on the global stage.
