India Stands for Dialogue, Skips Signing Swiss Summit Communique
India, on Sunday, chose not to sign a joint communique at a summit in Switzerland aimed at fostering peace in Ukraine, emphasizing its stance that any resolution must be mutually agreeable to both Moscow and Kyiv. The summit, held in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock, saw participation from over 100 countries and organizations, with notable absences including Russia, which was not invited, and China, which opted not to attend. Pavan Kapoor, Secretary West in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), represented India at this significant gathering.

India's decision to abstain from aligning with any communique or document from the summit was articulated clearly by Kapoor. He stressed that India's involvement in the summit and previous meetings was driven by a consistent approach advocating for dialogue and diplomacy as the pathways to enduring peace. Kapoor highlighted India's commitment to engaging with all stakeholders and both parties involved in the conflict to support efforts towards a lasting resolution in Ukraine.
The Summit on Peace in Ukraine concluded with the key aim of inspiring a future peace process. During his address, Kapoor underscored the importance of India's participation as a means to understand various perspectives and explore viable options for a sustainable conflict resolution. He reiterated India's position that only solutions acceptable to both conflicting parties can pave the way for lasting peace.
Despite not signing the joint communique, India remains invested in the global concern over the situation in Ukraine and supports collective efforts towards a peaceful settlement. The joint communique issued at the summit's conclusion by 83 states and organizations underscored a commitment to sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity principles, aligning with international law.
Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged in dialogues with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. India has consistently advocated for resolving the crisis through diplomacy and dialogue without explicitly condemning the invasion.
At the summit, President Zelenskyy sought support for his 10-point peace plan, initially outlined in 2022, emphasizing inclusivity and collaboration for peace. Prime Minister Modi, during a recent meeting with Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy, reiterated India's support for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, highlighting a human-centric approach to conflict resolution.
India's stance at the Summit on Peace in Ukraine reflects its dedication to understanding different perspectives and contributing constructively to peace efforts. By prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy, India continues to play an active role in international discussions aimed at resolving one of the most pressing global conflicts today.
