India's Diplomatic Move Amid Iran-Israel Conflict: Jaishankar Talks to Katz
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a crucial telephonic dialogue with his Israeli counterpart, Israel Katz, amidst escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. This conversation, which took place on Sunday, revolved around India's apprehensions concerning the recent hostilities initiated by Iran against Israel. The exchange highlighted the urgent need for regional stability and the importance of diplomatic engagements in resolving such conflicts.

The catalyst for this sudden surge in aggression was Iran's unprecedented direct assault on Israel, launching hundreds of drones and missiles as retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on its consulate in Damascus on April 1. This significant escalation prompted immediate international concern, with India expressing serious reservations about the potential impact on regional peace and security.
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been vocal about its stance on the conflict, advocating for an immediate de-escalation and urging both parties to exercise restraint. The MEA emphasized the critical need for stepping back from violence and returning to diplomatic negotiations to resolve the crisis. With a close eye on the evolving situation in West Asia, India's embassies in the region are maintaining constant communication with the Indian community, ensuring their safety amidst the growing tensions.
In addition to his conversation with Katz, Jaishankar also reached out to his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, reflecting India's active engagement in facilitating dialogue between the conflicting parties. Following Iran's attack, the Israeli military reported successful interception of the majority of over 300 drones and missiles launched by Iran, with significant assistance from the American military. U.S. President Joe Biden confirmed the pivotal role played by the United States in aiding Israel to neutralize the aerial threats posed by Iran.
This series of events underscores the volatile nature of geopolitical relations in West Asia and highlights the importance of international cooperation in maintaining regional security and stability. As tensions continue to simmer between Israel and Iran, the global community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution through diplomatic channels.
