India Calls for Protection of Civilians After Israeli Airstrike in Rafah

The recent airstrike in Rafah, resulting in the tragic loss of 45 civilian lives at a displacement camp, has drawn serious concern from India, highlighting the ongoing conflict's grave humanitarian implications. The External Affairs Ministry spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, expressed India's deep concern over the incident during his weekly media briefing. This event has not only triggered a wave of global outrage but also prompted criticism from some of Israel's closest allies.

India Concerned Over Rafah Airstrike

India's stance on the conflict was further clarified with its acknowledgment of the coordinated decision by Spain, Norway, and Ireland to formally recognise Palestine. This move aligns with India's long-standing support for a two-state solution, advocating for the establishment of a sovereign, viable, and independent state of Palestine alongside Israel in peace. Jaiswal reiterated India's position, emphasizing the country's early recognition of Palestine in the 1980s and its consistent advocacy for the protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law.

The Israeli military has accepted responsibility for the Rafah airstrike, describing it as a tragic incident and announcing an investigation into the matter. This development comes amid ongoing military offensives in Gaza by Israel, retaliating against Hamas' unprecedented attack on Israeli cities on October 7 last year. The conflict has seen significant casualties, with Hamas-run authorities in Gaza reporting over 35,000 deaths due to the Israeli offensive.

India's call for de-escalation and the resumption of direct peace negotiations underscores the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. The recognition of Palestine by Spain, Ireland, and Norway is viewed as an attempt to pressure Israel into halting its military actions in Gaza. With a history of supporting peace initiatives in the region, India remains committed to advocating for a two-state solution that ensures peace and stability.

The situation in Gaza remains tense, with the international community closely monitoring developments. India's position reflects its broader foreign policy objectives that prioritize human rights and international law, aiming to contribute constructively towards achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.
