The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Department of Rural Development's proposal to build an additional two crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G). This decision extends the scheme from April 2024 to March 2029, aiming to construct these houses with existing unit assistance rates.

Funding and Implementation

The scheme will be implemented during FY 2024-25 to 2028-29. The construction cost per house is set at Rs 1.20 lakh for plain areas and Rs 1.30 lakh for North Eastern Region States and Hill States, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. The total budget for this period is Rs 3,06,137 crore, with the central government contributing Rs 2,05,856 crore and states providing Rs 1,00,281 crore.

The initiative aims to complete houses left unfinished from the previous phase of PMAY-G by March 31 this year. These will be completed in FY 2024-25 at the current rates. The new proposal is expected to benefit around 10 crore individuals by providing safe and secure housing with essential amenities.

Objective and Benefits

The primary goal of PMAY-G is to achieve "Housing for All" in rural areas. Launched in April 2016, the scheme initially targeted constructing 2.95 crore houses with basic amenities by March 2024. The recent approval ensures that houseless individuals and those living in dilapidated or kutcha houses can build quality homes with necessary facilities.

The scheme's continuation will enhance safety, hygiene, and social inclusiveness for beneficiaries. It underscores the government's commitment to improving living conditions in rural India through substantial financial support and structured implementation.

The official statement highlighted that the new phase would facilitate building secure homes for all eligible beneficiaries. This effort aligns with the broader objective of ensuring decent living standards across rural regions.

The extension of PMAY-G reflects a significant step towards addressing housing needs in rural India. By providing financial assistance and a clear implementation timeline, the government aims to uplift millions of rural households.

This initiative not only focuses on housing but also on improving overall quality of life by ensuring access to basic amenities. The comprehensive approach aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable society.

The approval marks a critical milestone in India's rural development agenda. It reaffirms the government's dedication to enhancing infrastructure and living conditions in underserved areas.

By March 2029, the scheme aims to have made a substantial impact on rural housing. The continued focus on quality construction and timely completion underscores the importance of sustainable development practices.

The Union Cabinet's decision is a testament to its ongoing efforts to bridge the urban-rural divide. It highlights the importance of inclusive growth and development across all regions of India.

Ensuring that every rural household has access to safe and secure housing remains a top priority. The PMAY-G scheme is a pivotal component of this mission, driving progress towards a more equitable future for all citizens.

The concluding phase of PMAY-G will play a crucial role in achieving these goals. It represents a comprehensive strategy aimed at transforming rural housing infrastructure over the next five years.

In summary, the Union Cabinet's approval for extending PMAY-G signifies a robust commitment to rural development. It sets a clear path forward for enhancing living standards through strategic investments in housing infrastructure.
