India, Bangladesh Aim to Strengthen Visa, Extradition Cooperation

India and Bangladesh engaged in the fourth round of the India-Bangladesh Consular Dialogue in Delhi, focusing on enhancing cooperation in various consular issues, including visas, mutual legal assistance, and extradition cases. This meeting underscored the two nations' commitment to bolstering people-to-people exchanges and streamlining mechanisms for better coordination on consular matters.

Boosting India-Bangladesh Ties

The dialogue, held on Wednesday, saw discussions aimed at strengthening the bilateral Revised Travel Arrangement (RTA) to ease the movement of nationals between the two countries. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the importance of this dialogue as a platform for both nations to explore avenues for closer cooperation in consular, visa matters, repatriation, Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), and extradition cases.

Initiated in 2017, the India-Bangladesh consular dialogue mechanism serves as a testament to the commitment of both countries to enhance people-to-people contacts. This regular channel of communication has been pivotal in addressing issues related to consular services and legal assistance mutually beneficially.

Dr. Aman Puri, Joint Secretary (consular-passport-visa division) at the Ministry of External Affairs, led the Indian delegation during these talks. Representing Bangladesh was Rokebul Haque, Director General (South Asia) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both sides have agreed to continue this tradition of dialogue and have planned to hold the next round in Dhaka at a mutually convenient date.

The reaffirmation by both nations to further strengthen their bilateral relations through the Revised Travel Arrangement reflects their dedication to facilitating easier movement for their nationals. This dialogue not only enhances diplomatic ties but also promotes cultural exchange and understanding between India and Bangladesh.
