India asks the UK for increased monitoring of pro-Khalistani elements

India on Wednesday raised concerns on the misuse of the United Kingdom's asylum status by pro-Khalistani elements to aid and abet terrorist activities in India.

It comes after a "breach of security" at its High Commission in London in March.

India asks the UK for increased monitoring of pro-Khalistani elements

At a meeting in New Delhi between senior British and Indian home ministry officials, India requested better cooperation with Britian and increased monitoring of UK-based Pro-Khalistan extremists and to take appropriate proactive action.

The Indian delegation was led by Union Home Secretary, Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the UK delegation was led by Permanent Secretary, Home Office, Sir Matthew Rycroft. The meeting was also attended by other senior officials of both countries, a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs said.

During the meeting, both sides reviewed the ongoing cooperation and identified further steps that can be taken to explore opportunities and synergies in advancing cooperation in counter-terrorism, cyber security & global supply chains, drug trafficking, migration, extradition, anti-India activities in the UK including pro-Khalistan extremism among other issues.

India's concerns over the breach of security of the Indian High Commission were also emphasized.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing satisfaction with the ongoing partnership and agreeing to deepen bilateral engagement and maintain the momentum for enhanced security cooperation between the two countries

India was upset with the UK after protesters carrying "Khalistan" banners pulled down the Indian flag at the London mission following Punjab police action against Sikh separatist leader Amritpal Singh.

The tricolour flying atop the Indian High Commission in London was pulled down by a group of protesters waving separatist Khalistani flags and chanting pro-Khalistani slogans.

Images of shattered windows and men climbing the India House building were circulating on social media and videos from the scene showed an Indian official grabbing the flag from a protester through the first-floor window of the mission, while the protester was seen waving a Khalistan flag hanging off its ledge.
