IFFI 2024 in Goa Showcases 19 World Premieres and 43 Asian Premieres
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasised India's commitment to nurturing a robust content creators' economy. Speaking via video at the 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, he welcomed attendees to this year's cinematic celebration. The festival, hosted in Panaji, will showcase 19 world and international premieres, 43 Asian premieres, and 109 Indian premieres over eight days.

Vaishnaw highlighted IFFI's significance in India's film industry growth. "We, in India, at this time are very much focused on developing strong content creators’ economy," he stated. He noted that innovative content is emerging, reflecting India's rich heritage, cuisines, and culture. The minister believes technology can significantly enhance India's role in the creators' economy.
Focus on Technology and Partnerships
Vaishnaw expressed hope that the festival would foster new partnerships and ideas. He encouraged young talents to seek mentorship and share ideas that could shape the industry's future. "We hope that you will find new partnerships and develop new ideas. We hope that some of the youngsters will get mentors. We hope also that many of the ideas that you share with us will help us shape the direction of the industry in the company," he said to the delegates.
The festival's inauguration at Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Stadium paid homage to Indian cinema legends Raj Kapoor, Mohammed Rafi, Tapan Sinha, and Akkineni Nageswara Rao on their centenary birth anniversaries. Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant remarked on Goa's long-standing association with IFFI since 2004, crediting former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for bringing the festival to Goa.
Indian Cinema's Global Reach
Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Dr L Murugan, noted Indian cinema's evolution from regional to global prominence. He highlighted efforts by the Ministry to promote Indian films worldwide. Murugan mentioned the establishment of a film facilitation office to streamline shooting approvals for producers.
Murugan also shared that amendments to the Cinematograph Act are underway to protect producers from piracy, following requests from various Cinema Chambers. The festival commenced with "The Better Man," an Australian film directed by Michael Gracey. This film pays tribute to British pop icon Robbie Williams' resilience and fame.
The IFFI continues to be a pivotal event for India's film industry, offering a platform for showcasing diverse cinematic talents and fostering international collaborations. As it progresses, it remains a testament to India's cultural richness and technological advancements in filmmaking.
