Hyderabad, Aug 3: Mahmood Ali, the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, created a new controversy while making a comment on historic Charminar in Hyderabad.

Mahmood Ali has been quoted as saying, "When a building becomes weak, if Charminar becomes weak, in 200 years, 400 years or 500 years, it will have to be razed too. If a building becomes weak, it can fall any time and claim many lives."

Mr Ali's statement did not go well with many, especially with Opposition leaders.

Mr Ali's statement on Charminar surfaced during a debate between government officials and opposition leaders regarding the Telangana government's decision of rebuilding the 90-year-old Osmania General Hospital (OGH) in the city.

The opposition leaders, however,, opposed the government's move saying that they will not allow anyone to demolish the heritage structure.

He also clarified confusion over his remark on Charminar saying that he was speaking in a general sense that after 1,000 years, situation may arise when the historic monument might be demolished if it would become weak.

Charminar is a sixteenth century monument located in old Hyderabad and a major landmark and tourist destination.
