India's Investment Potential in Microgravity Research Discussed by ISRO Chief S Somanath

ISRO chief S Somanath highlighted India's potential in microgravity research, emphasising collaboration with stakeholders like vaccine developers. Speaking at the Raksha Summit 2024, Somanath noted significant interest in space-related medical research. He stated that India could invest in this field, engaging with various stakeholders, including those in vaccine development and medical diagnostics.

ISRO Chief Discusses Indias Microgravity Research Potential

The Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Space have signed an MoU to advance biotechnology research in space. This collaboration aims to enhance understanding of human physiological responses in microgravity, particularly concerning body fluids. Somanath pointed out the need for locally manufactured hospital equipment, as many current technologies are not produced in India.

Microgravity Research and Healthcare Equipment

Somanath highlighted ISRO's journey from importing components to developing them domestically. Initially, ISRO sourced parts from various suppliers but gradually collaborated with industries to produce local components like electronic parts and materials. Today, 90% of these are sourced within India, benefiting high-tech sectors such as defence and aerospace.

He suggested a similar approach for healthcare equipment, advocating for domestic design and production to meet local market demands. By partnering with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), companies can bring manufacturing processes to India, fostering innovation and reducing costs.

Opportunities in Space-Related Medical Research

Somanath reiterated the vast potential for research in microgravity and space-related medical fields. He encouraged the development of diagnostic and hospital equipment within India, questioning why such initiatives aren't more widespread. The aim is to create a robust ecosystem that supports high-tech domains like healthcare alongside aerospace.

The ISRO chief expressed optimism about future research opportunities, noting the growing interest among stakeholders. By leveraging India's capabilities in microgravity research, there is potential for significant advancements in medical science and technology.

India's focus on microgravity research aligns with its broader goals of self-reliance and technological advancement. By investing in this area, the country can enhance its scientific capabilities while contributing to global knowledge in space medicine.
