Himachal Pradesh: MLA, Rebels Father Defy Court Order in Electoral Offence Case
An Independent MLA and the father of a Congress rebel in Himachal Pradesh have defied a High Court order to join an investigation into electoral offences, citing health issues.
In a recent turn of events, an Independent MLA and the father of a Congress rebel in India have defied a High Court order to join an investigation related to electoral offenses, citing health issues. The case involves allegations of electoral offenses, bribery, and criminal conspiracy during the recent Rajya Sabha polls in the state.

Background of the Case
The case against the duo, Hamirpur Independent MLA Ashish Sharma and Gagrets now-disqualified MLA Chetanya Sharma's father Rakesh Sharma, and others was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Congress MLAs Sanjay Avasthi and Bhuvneshwar Gaur. The Himachal Pradesh High Court had granted them interim anticipatory bail on Tuesday.
Defying the Court Order
Despite the court's directive to register their presence at the Boileauganj police station on March 15 and cooperate in the investigation, Ashish Sharma and Rakesh Sharma failed to appear. Their advocates visited the police station and presented medical certificates, citing health reasons for their absence. They requested a seven-day relaxation, and the police informed that the high court would be notified about this development.
Allegations and Reactions
The case stems from allegations of horse trading, misuse of money to influence the elections, and criminal conspiracy during the Rajya Sabha polls. Six Congress MLAs had voted for the BJP candidate from the state, leading to accusations of unethical practices. The nine MLAs involved, including Ashish Sharma and Chetanya Sharma, have expressed their discontent with the pressure tactics employed against them and their families.
Deployment of CRPF Personnel
In response to the situation, CRPF personnel have been deployed at the residences of the nine MLAs, including the six Congress rebels and the three Independents. The Central government has provided Y category security cover to all nine legislators who had voted in favor of the BJP candidate during the Rajya Sabha polls.
The defiance of the High Court order by the Independent MLA and the father of the Congress rebel has added a new dimension to the ongoing electoral offenses case. As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen how the legal proceedings will unfold and impact the political landscape in the state.
