HCBA Nagpur Strongly Condemns Attack on Chief Justice BR Gavai During Court Proceedings

The High Court Bar Association in Nagpur condemned an attack on Chief Justice BR Gavai, urging swift action against the perpetrator. This incident is viewed as an affront to judicial integrity and the rule of law.

The High Court Bar Association (HCBA) in Nagpur has strongly condemned an attempt to attack Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during court proceedings. The incident involved a lawyer trying to throw a shoe at the CJI, which the HCBA described as a direct assault on the judiciary's institution.

In a statement, HCBA President Atul Pande expressed the association's strongest disapproval of this disgraceful act. He emphasised that such behaviour is an affront to the dignity of the highest judicial office and a direct attack on the judiciary itself. The HCBA stressed that this conduct is intolerable and unbecoming of a legal professional.

Judiciary's Integrity and Independence

The HCBA highlighted that the Chief Justice of India is not just an individual but a constitutional authority representing the judiciary's independence and integrity. Any attempt to intimidate or insult the CJI, whether physically or symbolically, undermines the rule of law and democracy in India.

The association reiterated its commitment to professional ethics, stating that advocacy is a solemn profession requiring decorum and integrity. They demanded immediate disciplinary action against the individual involved, urging unity within the legal fraternity to uphold judicial values.

Incident Details and Immediate Response

The incident occurred when Rakesh Kishore, a 71-year-old lawyer, attempted to throw a shoe at CJI Gavai in the Supreme Court in New Delhi. This happened during a session where cases were being mentioned by lawyers. Security personnel quickly intervened, preventing any harm.

Following this shocking event, the Bar Council of India suspended Kishore's license immediately. The HCBA expressed solidarity with CJI Gavai and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the judiciary's independence and dignity.

The association called for exemplary action against Kishore, stressing that preserving civility and respect for constitutional institutions is crucial. They urged all legal professionals to stand united in protecting the judicial system's sanctity.
