HC Grants Bail To Man Who Allegedly Abused Lord Ram

The Allahabad High Court has reportedly granted bail to a man who had abused Lord Ram on his social media account.

As he gave an unconditional apology at the police station, the court granted bail to one Riyaz alias Ovaisi who had abused Lord Ram on Facebook, according to a report in the Live Law website.

Justice Sameer Jain's bench granted him relief, noting that he does not have prior criminal records and he has been in custody since January 28, 2024. The court also considered that the offences against him carry a maximum punishment of three years.

As per the report, Riyaz has been booked under Sections 153-A, 295-A, 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act. He was arrested for allegedly abusing Lord Rama on his Facebook account.

In his bail plea, the accused had claimed innocence and stated that he never abused Lord Shri Ram. His counsel argued that someone else accessed his account to make the alleged post.

He further claimed that he is a law-abiding citizen who holds faith in the Hindu religion despite being Muslim. Upon learning of the alleged post, he promptly tendered an unconditional apology at the police station.

Furthermore, his counsel argued that the secular fabric of the country is resilient enough not to be disrupted by such fabricated messages.

However, the Assistant Government Advocate (AGA) opposed the bail plea, but he could not contest the fact that the applicant has no prior criminal record and has been in jail for close to three months.

Meanwhile, the Hindus across the globe are celebrating Ram Navami which celebrates the birthday of the Lord. People throughout the nation fast, recite the Ramayana, and offer prayers to Lord Rama, Sita Mata, Lakshmana, Hanuman, and other revered characters from the epic.
