Hathras Stampede: SIT Report Cites Overcrowding, Clears Bhole Baba of Fault
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has its findings to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Y Adityath regarding the Hathras stampede that resulted in 121 fatalities on July 2. Overcrowding was identified as the primary cause of the disaster. The report, initially handed over by ADG Agra Zone and Commissioner Aligarh, suggests potential actions against those found responsible.

Hathras Stampede Claims 121 Lives
The Uttar Pradesh government confirmed that most of the 121 deceased from the 'satsang' in Sikandra Rao have been identified. Devotees from various districts and neighbouring states attended the event. Officials are working to identify the remaining bodies. The tragedy occurred as devotees rushed to see Bhole Baba at the event's conclusion.
Sources indicate that officers and employees found guilty might face consequences after examining the report. The local administration could also be held accountable for inadequate crowd control measures. The two-member committee found organisers culpable for not implementing sufficient crowd management strategies, which could have lessened the death toll.
Judicial Commission to Investigate Further
A judicial commission set up by the Uttar Pradesh government will continue probing the incident. Panel member Brijesh Kumar Shrivastava, a retired Allahabad High Court judge, stated that they would issue a public notice soon. This notice will invite locals and witnesses to share any evidence related to the stampede.
Interestingly, the report does not mention any fault of self-styled godman Surajpal alias Narayan Sakar Hari alias 'Bhole Baba'. Meanwhile, another panel member confirmed that anyone required for inquiry would be contacted by the judicial commission.
The investigation revealed that despite knowing about the large crowd, adequate arrangements were not made by local authorities. This negligence significantly contributed to the high number of casualties during the event.
The SIT's detailed examination aims to ensure accountability and prevent such tragedies in future religious gatherings. The findings stress on better planning and execution of crowd control measures to safeguard lives during large events.
