Govt May Table Uniform Civil Code Bill in Parliament Monsoon Session

The government is considering tabling a bill on implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, which is scheduled to begin from July 17. The bill may be sent to the parliamentary standing committee on law and justice, which will hear from various stakeholders on the issue.

This development follows the recent notice issued by the law panel, seeking input from stakeholders on the matter of a uniform civil code, which prompted the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice to summon representatives from the Law Commission and the law ministry on July 3.

The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a recent speech that the government is committed to implementing the UCC. He said that the UCC is not about interfering in religious matters, but about ensuring equality for all citizens.

The UCC is a proposal to replace personal laws based on religion with a single set of civil laws for all citizens. This would mean that all citizens, regardless of their religion, would be governed by the same laws on matters such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance.

The UCC has been a controversial issue in India for many years. Some people support it, arguing that it would promote equality and secularism. Others oppose it, arguing that it would violate religious freedom.

It remains to be seen whether the government will be able to pass the UCC bill in Parliament. The bill is likely to face opposition from various quarters, including religious groups and political parties.

However, the government's decision to consider tabling the bill is a significant step forward in the debate on the UCC. It shows that the government is serious about implementing the UCC and that it is willing to face the challenges that come with it.

The Uniform Civil Code aims to replace personal laws that are currently based on religious, customary, and traditional practices with a single comprehensive law applicable to all individuals, regardless of their religion, caste, creed, sexual orientation, or gender.
