Govt Launches Udaan Yatri Cafe; Kolkata Airport To Have First Affordable Food Stall

In response to numerous complaints about overpriced food and drinks at airports, the Government has introduced the 'Udaan Yatri Cafe' initiative. This move follows Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha's criticism during the winter session of Parliament. He highlighted the high costs of essentials like water, tea, and snacks at airports. The first cafe will open at Kolkata's Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport as a pilot project.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation announced that this affordable cafe will offer items such as water, tea, coffee, and snacks at reasonable prices. Kolkata Airport was chosen for this pilot project, marking a significant step in providing affordable food options at major Indian airports. If successful, the initiative will be expanded to other Airports Authority of India (AAI)-operated airports nationwide.

Affordable Food Initiative At Indian Airports

Raghav Chadha's Concerns on Airport Food Cost

Raghav Chadha raised concerns in Parliament about passengers paying inflated prices for airport food and drinks. He noted that a bottle of water could cost up to Rs 100, while tea might be priced at Rs 200-250. Chadha questioned why affordable canteens couldn't be established to ease this burden on travellers.

Chadha also criticised airport disorganisation and overcrowding, likening them to bus stands due to long queues and poor management. His remarks resonated with many people who supported his efforts to make air travel more accessible and affordable for everyone.

Public Support for Affordable Travel

Chadha's comments received widespread praise on social media. Many hailed him as a champion for ordinary citizens. Support came from various quarters, including Konchok Stanzin, a counsellor from Chushul near Ladakh's China border. Stanzin highlighted the challenges faced by people from remote areas like Ladakh during expensive winter air travel.

Chadha also criticised rising airfares in India, noting they were increasingly unaffordable for common people. Referring to the Indian Aviation Bill 2024, he remarked that even those wearing Bata shoes couldn't afford air travel now. He pointed out that routes like Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Patna now cost Rs 10,000-14,500.

Hope For Implementation At All Airports

The 'Udaan Yatri Cafe' initiative is seen as a positive step towards making air travel more affordable and comfortable for all passengers. By offering reasonably priced amenities, the government aims to ensure air travel becomes more accessible amid rising costs and crowded airports.

As the pilot project begins in Kolkata, many hope it will expand to other airports across India. This would make air travel more affordable and convenient for everyone involved.

"Finally, the government has listened to the voice of the common man," MP Raghav Chadha said approvingly. "I hope this initiative is extended to all airports." His statement reflects optimism that this step will prevent travellers from paying Rs 100-250 for basic items like water or tea.
