Gorakhpur tragedy: Letters prove 'negligence' on part of BRD hospital

The death toll in Gorakhpur tragedy rose to 63 after an 11-year-old child died due to encephalitis at Baba Raghav Das Medical College hospital on Saturday.

The death toll of children, including newborns, mostly suffering from encephalitis at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College and Hospital in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, has risen to 63 on Saturday. While the blame game has already begun, the two letters sent by the hospital employees to its senior authorities three days back, shows how hospital was negligent on its part.

On Thursday morning, the hospital employees who handle the storage plant at the hospital from where oxygen is piped to different wards, wrote a letter to the Chief Medical Officer informing him that the stock of liquid oxygen was dangerously low and would not last the night. The operators told with the authorities to act urgently and save the lives of the patients. This was their second letter; the first sent a week earlier had remained unanswered.

Pushpa Sales, the agency which was supplying Oxygen to the hospital, had been writing letters to the District Magistrate for payment of pending bills and copies of these letters were marked to Principal Secretary and Director General of UP Medical Education Department. The copies were also marked to the BRD Medical College Hospital.
