Gorakhpur tragedy: Lack of coordination, laxity led to children deaths says report
Following the incident, the UP government had suspended Dr Mishra.
A report prepared following a probe into the Gorakhpur tragedy in which 30 children died has blamed the doctors for the incident. The report found that it was the laxity on part of the doctors which led to the death of the children allegedly due to shortage of oxygen. 30 children, mostly new born, had died allegedly owing to shortage of oxygen at the hospital in a period of 36-hours between Thursday and Friday.

The probe was conducted by the district magistrate of Gorakhpur. The probe revealed that the lives of the children could have been saved had there been more care taken by the doctors. The report also blamed the doctors for the lack of coordination.
In the report it was stated that the principal of the BRD medical college Dr Rajiv Kumar Mishra and another senior doctor had left the hospital at a time, when there already was a shortage of liquid oxygen. The senior officials should have made arrangements before leaving the premises, the report pointed out. It was also stated that the stock of liquid oxygen was alarmingly low for the past couple of days. There was complete lack of coordination between the doctors of the various departments, the report also found.
Following the incident, the UP government had suspended Dr Mishra. It also shunted Dr Kafeel Khan on charges of laxity. UP Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath had said that the deaths had been caused due to Encephalitis and not lack of oxygen.
