German Chancellor Olaf Scholz Arrives in India for Strategic Talks with Prime Minister Modi
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has arrived in India for a three-day official visit. This visit includes discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on strategic partnerships in key sectors. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared on X that Scholz is in New Delhi for the 7th Intergovernmental Consultations and the 18th Asia Pacific Conference of German Business APK 2024.

The Chancellor's arrival was late Thursday night, and he was welcomed by Nityanand Rai, the Minister of State for Home Affairs. The MEA had previously announced that Scholz would visit India from October 24 to 26, following an invitation from Prime Minister Modi. Their discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral ties, particularly in defence, trade, and clean energy.
Focus on Strategic Partnerships
On Friday, Modi and Scholz are set to co-chair the seventh Intergovernmental Consultations (IGC). This framework involves ministers from both countries discussing their areas of responsibility and reporting outcomes to their leaders. The IGC is held every two years, with the last meeting in Berlin in May 2022.
During their meeting, Modi and Scholz agreed on the German-Indian Green and Sustainable Development Partnership (GSDP). This partnership aims to strengthen cooperation in sustainable development initiatives between the two nations.
Elevating Bilateral Relations
Ambassador Philipp Ackermann mentioned at a media interaction that there is a substantial agenda for Friday's discussions. The Chancellor and five federal ministers from Germany will be present in New Delhi for these talks. Ackermann highlighted that the German Cabinet has recently approved a significant document titled "Focus on India," which aims to elevate bilateral relations further.
The discussions between the two leaders are expected to cover various topics, reflecting the importance of this visit. The focus will be on strengthening strategic ties across multiple sectors, ensuring both countries benefit from enhanced cooperation.
This visit marks a significant step in deepening the relationship between Germany and India. By focusing on key areas like defence, trade, and clean energy, both nations aim to foster stronger ties and mutual growth opportunities.
