Former Principal Of RG Kar Medical College Under CBI Questioning For Trainee Doctor’s Death
Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, appeared before Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for questioning the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor. This marked his second consecutive day of interrogation.

The CBI began questioning Ghosh at 9:30 pm on Friday and continued until 1:40 am on Saturday. According to a PTI report, Ghosh was initially made to sit in a room at Kolkata's CBI office before the interrogation commenced.
Doctors Protest Against Trainee Doctor's Death
In response to the tragic incident, doctors and interns staged a 24-hour strike at the entrance of a government hospital. They protested against the rape and killing of their colleague, demanding justice and better security measures.
During the first day of questioning, Ghosh was asked about his immediate reaction upon learning about the doctor's death. He was also questioned about who he instructed to inform the victim's family and how the police were contacted. An officer mentioned that some of Ghosh's answers were 'convoluted’.
High Court Orders Case Transfer to CBI
On August 13, the Calcutta High Court ordered that the case be transferred to the CBI. The court also instructed Ghosh to submit a leave application following protests triggered by his appointment as principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital immediately after resigning from RG Kar College.
Ghosh resigned from his post at RG Kar Medical College on Monday, citing defamation on social media platforms as his reason. "How can the principal - who resigned by taking moral responsibility, be appointed as the principal of another government college? The court has asked him to submit a leave application by 3 pm today or the court will pass an order for him to leave the position," stated the high court.
Weekly Roster Under Scrutiny
During questioning, CBI officers inquired about the weekly roster where it was shown that the victim had been put on duty for extended hours—36 or even 48 hours. This aspect is being closely examined as part of their investigation.
The case has sparked significant controversy and led to widespread protests among medical professionals in Kolkata. The investigation continues as authorities seek justice for the deceased doctor.
The father of the deceased doctor has suggested that colleagues might be involved in her death, adding another layer of complexity to an already sensitive case. The CBI is expected to delve deeper into these allegations as they proceed with their investigation.
