Deadly Flash Flood Hits North Sikkim: Cloudburst Triggers Disaster in Teesta River Basin
A disastrous flash flood was triggered by a cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim resulting in at least ten deaths and leaving around 80 people missing. The situation was exacerbated by water release from Chungthang dam. Over 3,000 tourists along with several workers employed at the Teesta Stage III dam are currently stranded due to extensive damage to road infrastructure.
On October 4th, a catastrophic cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim led to a flash flood in the Teesta River basin, resulting in the tragic loss of at least ten lives and leaving 80 others missing. The calamity had far-reaching effects, with casualties reported from various regions and significant damage inflicted on local infrastructure.
Casualties and Missing Personnel

The officials confirmed that all ten deceased were civilians, three of whom were found washed up in north Bengal. Additionally, 22 army personnel are among those unaccounted for following the disaster. A ray of hope emerged when one of the 23 initially missing soldiers was rescued later in the day.
Worsening Conditions
The flooding began around 1:30 am and was further exacerbated by water released from Chungthang dam. This unexpected surge worsened an already dire situation, leading to increased damage and hindrance to rescue operations.
Stranded Tourists and Workers
Sikkim Chief Secretary V B Pathak revealed that over 3,000 tourists from across India found themselves stranded due to these unforeseen circumstances. They were spread across different parts of Sikkim with no immediate means for evacuation owing to damaged infrastructure.
In addition to this, several workers engaged at Teesta Stage III dam in Chungthang also faced perilous conditions as they remained trapped within tunnels of the dam following the sudden deluge.
Destruction of Infrastructure
Apart from human casualties, another major concern arising out of this disastrous event is extensive infrastructural damage. According to Chief Secretary Pathak's report, fourteen bridges collapsed under the onslaught of flooding; nine under Border Roads Organization (BRO) jurisdiction alone. This has significantly hampered relief and rescue operations, further complicating the situation.
In conclusion, this catastrophic cloudburst in Sikkim has resulted in a tragic loss of life and considerable damage to infrastructure. The immediate concern is the rescue of stranded tourists and workers, as well as locating missing army personnel. In the long term, however, there will be significant challenges to overcome in terms of restoring damaged infrastructure and providing support for those affected by this disaster. It serves as a poignant reminder that while we can predict weather conditions with increasing accuracy, nature's fury remains unpredictable and potentially devastating.
