Private University Chancellor Faces Charges Over Alleged Admissions Scandal
Zora Singh, the chancellor of Desh Bhagat University in Fatehgarh Sahib, has been booked by police on various charges including cheating and criminal breach of trust. The case was registered following complaints from nursing students who alleged that the university enrolled more students than seats allotted by the Indian Nursing Council.
In a recent development in Fatehgarh Sahib, Punjab, local authorities have registered charges against the chancellor of Desh Bhagat University and seven other individuals. The charges include cheating and criminal breach of trust, based on complaints lodged by a group of nursing students from the university.
Chancellor Zora Singh Under Investigation

Zora Singh, the chancellor of Desh Bhagat University situated in Amloh, has been implicated in this case along with seven others. Deputy Superintendent of Police G S Bains confirmed the registration of these charges. This action follows several days of sustained protest by numerous nursing students from the university.
Nursing Students Raise Allegations
The majority of these protesting students hail from Jammu and Kashmir. They allege that the nursing college affiliated to Desh Bhagat University has enrolled more students than its allotted capacity as per Indian Nursing Council guidelines. These allegations raise serious questions about possible violations concerning educational norms and standards.
Fears Over Degree Recognition
The protesting students have also voiced concerns regarding their degrees' validity. They fear that due to over-enrollment beyond sanctioned capacity, most students might end up receiving degrees from an institute not duly recognized or affiliated with the council. Such a scenario could potentially jeopardize their future career prospects.
Discrepancy In Enrollment Numbers
According to protestors' claims, approximately 150 students were enrolled for the nursing course at Desh Bhagat University's affiliated college against only 60 seats approved by Indian Nursing Council - a clear violation if proven true.
Criminal Charges Registered Against University Authorities
The police have registered cases under relevant sections including Section 420 (cheating) and Section 406 (criminal breach of trust) as per the Indian Penal Code, against the university authorities. The police have reassured that a thorough investigation will be conducted into these serious allegations.
In conclusion, this case highlights the gravity of educational malpractices and their potential impacts on students' futures. It underscores the need for stringent checks and balances in our education system to ensure adherence to norms and standards set by respective councils. Moreover, it serves as a reminder that those in positions of power within such institutions must uphold trust placed in them by students and their parents. As investigations continue, one can only hope for justice to prevail and corrective measures taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
