FASTag Free Pass Ends: Will Two-Wheelers Pay Toll from July 15? Here's The Truth
Amid rising speculation and widespread media reports suggesting that toll charges for two-wheelers could be introduced starting July 15, the Government of India has officially dismissed such claims. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a strong clarification, calling these reports "baseless" and confirming that no such proposal is under active consideration.

FASTag for Two-Wheelers? Government Calls It 'Fake News'
While reports circulated suggesting that two-wheelers will soon need FASTag to pay tolls at highway entry points, NHAI's clarification has debunked the claim as false. On Thursday, NHAI released a statement via social media and official channels, stating,"Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers."
This clarification comes in response to viral news articles and social media posts that claimed a FASTag-based toll system would be extended to motorcycles and scooters beginning mid-July. The reports also mentioned potential toll fee structures and FASTag placement mechanisms for two-wheelers-none of which have been validated by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) or NHAI.
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also wrote:
What Triggered the Confusion?
Several media reports stated that from July 15, the government may begin charging toll fees for two-wheelers and that riders would be required to install FASTags on their vehicles. These claims were fueled by ongoing discussions about creating a unified tolling system and enhancing revenue collection for highway infrastructure.
While there was no official gazette notification confirming the policy, the speculation has sparked concern among riders and commuters across the country.
The Reality: Two-Wheelers Still Toll-Free
Currently, two-wheelers are exempt from tolls on most national and state highways in India. This policy reflects the government's commitment to maintaining affordable mobility for lower-income commuters and minimizing traffic congestion at toll booths.
Furthermore, there is no gazette notification, draft amendment, or public consultation document indicating a shift in this policy. Any change in toll rules must be made public through a notification from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and published in the official Gazette of India.
Will Two-Wheelers Need FASTag?
As it stands today:
Two-wheelers remain exempt from FASTag tolling.
There is no mandatory FASTag requirement for two-wheelers.
No user fee collection is planned for motorcycles or scooters on national highways.
Any future decision involving changes to toll rules or FASTag usage would require gazette publication and public notification, none of which have occurred.
But for now, two-wheeler riders continue to enjoy toll-free travel, and the FASTag free pass remains intact.
Despite viral posts and misleading news headlines, there is no truth to claims that FASTag will be mandatory for two-wheelers from July 15, 2025. Commuters are advised to follow verified government sources and ignore misinformation. The FASTag free pass for two-wheelers continues as per the current policy.
