Madhya Pradesh Farmer Rolls in Mud to Protest Land Encroachment
A farmer from Sahjala village in Madhya Pradesh rolled down a muddy road to reach the district collector's office in Khandwa on Tuesday. Shyamlal, the farmer, lodged a complaint against local officials for allegedly ignoring his plea about land encroachment. A video of his unusual protest went viral, prompting the collector to take action.

Collector Orders Action
District collector Anup Kumar Singh confirmed that Shyamlal claimed the village revenue official, or patwari, was not addressing his request to demarcate his land. "He directed the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) of the area to carry out the demarcation within the next ten days," Singh said. The collector added that this issue came to his attention for the first time.
Shyamlal told reporters he possessed all the title documents for his land. Despite this, some powerful individuals had taken over his property, and the patwari was ignoring his complaints. The farmer's protest highlighted his ongoing struggle to reclaim his land.
Public Hearing and Political Reaction
A jan-sunwai public hearing is held at the collector's office every Tuesday. During this session, Shyamlal's complaint was addressed, and immediate action was ordered. The allegation of encroachment will be verified after the demarcation process is completed, Singh added.
Senior Congress leader Arun Yadav commented on Shyamlal's situation, stating it exemplified the hardships farmers face under BJP rule. "He was struggling for the last two years to get his land demarcated. His land has been illegally occupied by some strongmen in connivance with the patwari," Yadav said.
The incident has drawn attention to issues of land rights and administrative negligence in rural areas. The outcome of the demarcation and subsequent verification will determine if Shyamlal can reclaim his land.
