Subhash Velingkar Critiques Successive Governments for Failing to Restore Goan Identity Post-Portuguese Rule
Subhash Velingkar, the former Goa RSS chief, expressed disappointment with successive governments for not restoring Goa's identity, which he claims was altered during Portuguese rule. Speaking at the Go-Dhvaj Sthapana Yatra in Kundaim village, North Goa, Velingkar emphasised that the suffering endured during the Portuguese-era Inquisition remains unforgettable. He stated that priests tortured their forefathers during this period.

Velingkar argued that the Portuguese attempted to alter Goa's identity, which was once known for its reverence towards the cow, or Go-mata. He criticised post-liberation governments for failing to revive this original identity. According to him, anti-religious and anti-cultural activities continue to gain recognition in the state.
Concerns Over Cultural Changes
The former RSS leader expressed concern over current cultural practices. He pointed out a contradiction where, despite worshipping Go-mata, the government ensures there is no beef shortage. He claimed that cow slaughter is being promoted, which contradicts traditional values.
Velingkar also criticised the growing popularity of events like the Sunburn festival and night parties in Goa. He alleged these activities are attempts to corrupt Goan youth through drugs, casinos, and prostitution. He attributed these issues to developments after liberation.
Legal Developments
Earlier on Tuesday, the Goa bench of the Bombay High Court granted anticipatory bail to Velingkar. This was in relation to a case where he is accused of making statements that hurt religious sentiments concerning St Francis Xavier, who is regarded as Goa's patron saint.
Velingkar's remarks have sparked discussions about cultural preservation and modern influences in Goa. His comments reflect ongoing debates about maintaining traditional values amidst contemporary changes.
The situation highlights tensions between preserving cultural heritage and adapting to new societal norms. Velingkar's statements have added fuel to these discussions, emphasising the need for a balance between tradition and modernity in Goa.
