Enforcement Directorate Files Money Laundering Case Against TMC's Mahua Moitra
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday lodged a money laundering case against Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s suspended MP Mahua Moitra. According to the reports, the investigating agency has lodged the case in connection with the alleged cash-for-query case. Notably, Parliament's ethics committee had suspended Mahua Moitra concerning the same case, and now she has to face proceedings under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
The reports said ED wants to grill her to know more about transactions linked to a non-resident external, or NRE, account.
On the other side, Mahua Moitra has junked all the allegations and has denied any wrongdoing.

However, the Trinamool Congress has again fielded Mahua from West Bengal's Krishnanagar seat and the party is confident that she will register a thumping victory in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024. Weeks ago, after her candidature was announced by TMC, Mahua Moitra said victory in elections would be a fitting response to BJP, which is continuously conspiring against her.
"My victory would be a fitting response to the ploy to expel me and harass me" through ED and CBI raids.
It was alleged that Mahua Moitra accepted gifts and illegal gratification for asking questions in the parliament.
The former investment banker with JP Morgan Chase, who had dubbed the expulsion recommendation by the Ethics committee as a "prefixed match by a kangaroo court", claimed the BJP has been trying to destroy democracy in the country.
"I have been saying this since my first speech in Parliament. The BJP is sounding the death knell for India as a constitutional democracy' But India is too great a nation to be destroyed by these fascist thugs," she said.
