Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi Critiques Police for Inability to Seize Synthetic Drugs
Governor R N Ravi expressed deep concern over the drug issue in Tamil Nadu, criticising the state police for their inability to seize even a gram of synthetic drugs. In contrast, Central agencies have managed to confiscate hundreds of kilograms. He emphasised that tackling this problem requires a mass movement, not just government efforts.

Ravi highlighted the severity of drug use among youth, noting that synthetic drugs are a significant threat. He mentioned that while opium and heroin are well-known, synthetic drugs are highly addictive and primarily affect young people, including students. The Governor stressed the need for strict action against this menace.
Drug Problem in Tamil Nadu
The Governor shared his observations on the drug situation in Tamil Nadu, where synthetic drugs are often referred to as ganja. In neighbouring states like Kerala and Karnataka, these substances are known as heroin or meth crystals. He pointed out that despite large seizures by Central agencies, state enforcement has not matched their success.
Ravi recounted his initial meeting with the then Police chief upon assuming office in Tamil Nadu. He urged the chief to focus on the drug problem, having witnessed firsthand how drugs can devastate families and societies. He called for tough measures to combat this issue effectively.
International Drug Trafficking Concerns
The Governor explained that drug trafficking involves both demand and supply aspects. He cited Afghanistan as an example of a country sustaining itself through drug production and distribution. Ravi also mentioned India's western neighbours using drug money to fund terrorism, known as narco-terrorism.
He warned about international drug cartels using India as a transit route for drugs destined for other countries like Sri Lanka. However, he believes India is becoming a drug-consuming society rather than just a transit point. This shift poses a serious challenge that needs urgent attention.
Role of Educational Institutions
Addressing parents at an event, Ravi advised them to spend quality time with their children and limit electronic gadget use. He praised educational institutions' involvement in anti-drug rallies but urged them not to ignore drug incidents on campus. Protecting reputations should not overshadow addressing drug issues.
The Governor suggested forming anti-drug squads within schools and colleges, comprising student volunteers. These squads should take responsibility seriously and report any incidents to teachers. Ravi emphasised the importance of innovative measures to combat drug use in educational settings.
Ravi concluded by stressing the need for collective action against drugs. He drew parallels with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's successful policies driven by mass participation. The fight against drugs requires similar widespread involvement from all sections of society.
