Congress Questions Transparency as Election Commissioner Arun Goel Resigns
The Congress party in India has raised concerns over the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel, alleging a lack of transparency in the Election Commissions functioning and government pressure.
The Congress party has expressed deep concern over the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel, alleging a lack of transparency in the functioning of the Election Commission (ECI) and government pressure on the institution. Goel's resignation comes just days before the expected announcement of the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Lack of Transparency and Government Pressure
Congress general secretary organization K C Venugopal took to social media to express his concerns. He stated that it is deeply concerning for the health of the world's largest democracy that an Election Commissioner has resigned on the cusp of the Lok Sabha elections. Venugopal alleged that there is absolutely no transparency in how the ECI has been functioning and the manner in which the government pressures it.
Venugopal highlighted the case of Ashok Lavasa, who dissented against a clean chit given to the Prime Minister for violating the Model Code of Conduct during the 2019 elections. He pointed out that Lavasa subsequently faced relentless inquiries, which, according to Venugopal, demonstrates the government's intent to destroy democratic traditions. He emphasized the need for the ECI to remain completely non-partisan at all times.
President Accepts Goel's Resignation
According to a law ministry notification, President Droupadi Murmu has accepted Goel's resignation with effect from Saturday. The reasons for his resignation are not immediately known.
About Arun Goel
Arun Goel, a retired bureaucrat, is a 1985-batch IAS officer of the Punjab cadre. He joined the Election Commission in November 2022. With the retirement of Anup Chandra Pandey in February and Goel's resignation, the three-member EC is now reduced to a single member, CEC Rajiv Kumar.
The Congress party's concerns over the resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel have raised questions about the transparency and independence of the ECI. The allegations of government pressure and the lack of non-partisanship have cast a shadow over the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. It is crucial for the ECI to maintain its integrity and impartiality to ensure the credibility of the electoral process in India.
