Dr Priya Vedi suicide case: Father-in-law defends son, says, “these things are common”

New Delhi, April 22: Three days after an AIIMS female doctor committed suicide inside a hotel in Delhi, due to marital discord, her father-in-law defended his 'gay' son.

According to reports, 31-year-old Priya's father-in-law said that "he only came to know about his son's sexual orientation after his so wife complained to him." [AIIMS doctor kills self, read complete suicide note]

As per an Indian Express report, Priya's father-in-law was quoted saying as, "These things are more common today so we do not know why our daughter-in-law was so disturbed. Of course, he did not tell me he had these problems. In fact, the marriage was fixed only after he met her and gave his consent."

Meanwhile, Dr Priya's colleagues are shocked and unable to come to terms that she has committed suicide.

They said that they were unaware of the troubles in the married life of the couple.

One of her colleague said that Priya, an anaesthetist used to happily show her husband's photographs to her and other collegaues and showed no sign of distress.

Priya's husband, Dr Kamal Vedi, who is also a doctor in AIIMS in dermatology and venereology department, was arrested on Sunday and has been sent to 14-day police custody. His mobile and laptop were also confiscated and sent to forensic lab.

He has been booked under IPC Sections 498A (cruelty) and 304B (dealing with the offences of dowry death).

Priya's elder brother works as a surgeon in Jodhpur and her younger brother is a banker. Her father, Ram Babu Verma, is said to be a tailor.

Before ending her life on Saturday night on April 18, inside Hotel Presidency in Paharganj area of Delhi, Dr Priya posted a shocking suicide note on Facebook. She also called her father and cried through entire conversation.

Her dead body was found by Delhi police officials at around 2.30 am inside the hotel room.

However, the suicide note has now been removed from the social networking site.

Dr Priya attempted suicide earlier too

Dr Priya's revealed that their daughter tried to kill herself earlier this month, following a heated argument with her husband. She had taken an overdose of sleeping pills.
