Disrespectful! Congress Slams Modi Govt Over Ex-PM Manmohan Singh's Funeral Site
A heated political debate erupted after the government decided to hold Manmohan Singh's last rites at Nigambodh Ghat. Congress leaders expressed their dissatisfaction, claiming it was disrespectful to the former Prime Minister and his family. The BJP countered, accusing Congress of politicising a moment of mourning for their own gain.
Rahul Gandhi voiced his discontent, calling the decision a "total insult" to Singh. He emphasised that previous Prime Ministers had their last rites at designated sites, allowing public homage without inconvenience. Gandhi insisted that Singh deserved a memorial and respect from the government.

Congress Criticises Government's Decision
Priyanka Gandhi echoed Rahul's sentiments, criticising the government's handling of Singh's funeral. She claimed it disrespected Singh's legacy and the Sikh community. Priyanka also mentioned witnessing Singh's family struggling for space at the funeral site amidst the crowd.
Congress leader Pawan Khera highlighted instances of mismanagement during the funeral. He noted inadequate seating for Singh's family and disruptions in the procession, which he believed showed a lack of respect for democratic values.
BJP Responds to Congress Allegations
The BJP responded by accusing Congress of playing politics over Singh's funeral. JP Nadda, BJP national president, condemned Congress leaders' statements as reflective of a "despicable mindset." He stated that space was allocated for a memorial and accused Congress of engaging in "cheap politics."
Sambit Patra, BJP spokesperson, alleged that Congress had previously disrespected its leaders. He cited examples like PV Narasimha Rao not being allowed entry into Congress headquarters for his last rites and Pranab Mukherjee facing similar treatment.
Centre's Statement on Funeral Arrangements
The Centre announced that Singh's cremation would occur at Nigambodh Ghat despite Congress's request for a dedicated location with a memorial. They assured that a trust would be formed and space allocated for this purpose but maintained that the cremation should proceed at the crematorium.
