Political Unrest Over Control of Matua Matriarch's Residence in Bengal
In a recent clash that has captured the attention of West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, political tensions flared in the Matua-majority Thakurnagar area. The confrontation involved supporters of BJP MP Shantanu Thakur and TMC MP Mamata Bala Thakur, centering around the control of a house once inhabited by the revered community matriarch Binapani Devi, affectionately known as Boroma. This incident, occurring five years after Devi's passing, has spotlighted the ongoing struggle for influence within the Matua community.

The conflict reportedly escalated on Sunday night when Shantanu Thakur, accompanied by his supporters, allegedly attempted to forcibly take over Boroma's residence, now occupied by Mamata Bala Thakur. The latter is not only a sitting TMC MP but also the daughter-in-law of Binapani Devi, while Shantanu Thakur holds the relation of her grandson. The TMC took to social media to decry the actions of the BJP supporters, labeling it as an act of hooliganism. A video shared on the X platform purportedly shows Shantanu Thakur and his group breaking into the property.
Shantanu Thakur has publicly claimed his legal right to half of the property, accusing Mamata Bala Thakur of unlawfully occupying and converting part of it into a TMC party office. "I am one of the legal heirs and have full right over half of this property. But Mamata Bala Thakur has taken full control of it illegally," he stated. In response, Mamata Bala Thakur has refuted these allegations and filed a police complaint regarding the break-in attempt at her residence.
This incident is not just a personal family dispute but also reflects deeper political rivalries within the Matua community. Shantanu Thakur's victory over Mamatabala Thakur in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, where issues like the CAA and NRC were pivotal, underscores the political dimensions of this confrontation. The Matua community, significant in number and influence in West Bengal's political landscape, finds itself at the heart of this escalating conflict between two of its prominent members.
As this situation develops, it remains to be seen how these tensions will affect the community's political affiliations and the broader political dynamics in West Bengal. The incident at Thakurnagar is a stark reminder of how personal disputes can quickly evolve into significant political confrontations, especially in areas with dense communal ties and historical legacies.
