The state elections more or less turned into a prestige issue for both the BJP and Congress, which is anxiously hoping to turn the tide with its aggressive campaigning and inviting manifesto.

The polling began at 7 AM and will end at 6 PM. The results of the single-phase Karnataka Assembly Elections will be declared on May 15. The counting of the votes will begin at 8 AM.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah-led Congress and the BJP are the main contenders for power. However, most pre-poll surveys have predicted a fractured mandate and suggested that former prime minister H D Deve Gowda's JD(S) may play the kingmaker's role.
