Delhi Minister Appeals to UP, Haryana for Emergency Water Supply Amid Crisis

In a significant move to address the acute water shortage in Delhi, Minister Atishi has reached out to the Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, requesting an increase in water supply to the national capital for the upcoming month. This request comes in light of Delhi facing a severe water crisis, exacerbated by a heatwave pushing temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius.

Delhi Seeks Water Aid from Neighbours

Atishi, who oversees the water portfolio, emphasized the critical situation in Delhi due to the soaring demand for water amidst the ongoing heatwave. In her communication dated May 31 to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, she highlighted the urgent need for additional water releases into the Yamuna River to mitigate the crisis. The letter pointed out that the water level at the Wazirabad barrage is currently below normal, standing at 670.3 feet against the usual 674.50 feet, adversely impacting the water production capacity of treatment plants in the area.

The minister's letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath similarly underscored the dire circumstances and appealed for support to ensure sufficient water supply for Delhi's residents during this challenging period. Atishi's plea aims to secure a comfortable passage for Delhi through the peak summer months by augmenting the city's water resources.

However, this call for assistance has sparked a political debate, with Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva accusing Atishi of politicizing the water crisis. Sachdeva argues that there is no shortage of raw water in Delhi, citing daily excess water supplies from Haryana and Uttarakhand, as per records from the Delhi Jal Board. He criticized Atishi's approach of sending letters to BJP-governed states and urged her to focus on practical solutions such as desilting water bodies and preventing water wastage and theft.

The exchange highlights the complexities of managing essential resources like water in a megacity like Delhi, especially under extreme weather conditions. The situation calls for collaborative efforts across administrative boundaries to ensure that citizens do not bear the brunt of infrastructural challenges. As Delhi awaits responses from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the resolution of this crisis remains a matter of keen public interest.
