Delhi Minister Kailash Gahlot Launches Mental Health Initiative in Prisons

Delhi Home Minister Kailash Gahlot inspected Tihar Jail on Saturday, announcing several prison reform measures, including a mental health programme. A comprehensive mental health initiative will be implemented across all Delhi prisons, alongside other reforms such as an electric vehicle facility for visitors at Tihar Jail and urgent renovations of toilets, according to an official statement.

During his visit to Central Jail No. 6, Gahlot reviewed vocational training provided by the Chal Charkha Unit and the Stitching and Jewellery Unit. He praised NGOs for their valuable contributions to inmate training. "We believe that every individual has the potential to reform, and it is our responsibility to provide them with the necessary resources to do so," Gahlot stated.

Mental Health and Healthcare Improvements

The minister proposed more comprehensive health programmes focusing on both physical and mental health to improve healthcare services within the jail premises. "A comprehensive mental health programme will be launched in all the prisons of Delhi for improving inmate health conditions for their overall well-being and rehabilitation," he said.

Gahlot's visit was part of the Delhi Government's ongoing efforts to enhance prison conditions. "I visited Tihar Jail, the largest prison complex in Asia, as part of these efforts. During my visit, I inspected the basic facilities being provided to the prisoners and issued some corrective directions," he mentioned.

Green Transportation Initiative

In line with promoting green transportation and reducing carbon footprints, Gahlot proposed introducing an electric vehicle (EV) facility at Tihar Jail for visitors. The statement highlighted that nearly 4000 visitors arrive daily at the Delhi Prisons complex to meet inmates.

The minister directed authorities to ensure clean, safe, and humane living environments for all inmates. This includes better sanitation, adequate ventilation, and access to basic amenities. The statement noted that Gahlot reviewed several key initiatives and reforms currently being implemented at Delhi Prisons and directed steps for further improvement.

Gahlot was accompanied by senior officials during his visit, including Delhi Home Secretary Chanchal Yadav, Director General of Prisons Satish Golcha, Additional Inspector General Ajay Kumar Bisht, Deputy Inspector General HQ and Tihar Range Rajeev Singh, among others.

The introduction of these reforms aims to enhance the overall well-being of inmates and improve their living conditions within the prison system. The focus on mental health programmes underscores the importance of addressing both physical and psychological needs for effective rehabilitation.
