Delhi Transport Minister Labels Gig Workers as Pollution Warriors, Promotes EV Use

Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot recently praised gig workers from food delivery companies as "Pradushan Yodha" or warriors against pollution. He highlighted their role in promoting electric vehicles (EVs) during an event at Talkatora Stadium organised by Zomato and Blinkit.

Gig Workers Urged to Use EVs

Gahlot addressed thousands of delivery partners, acknowledging them as the backbone of India's economy. He said, "You are ensuring that millions of people can receive household essentials in minutes and enjoy meals from their favourite restaurants with just a click. Your dedication keeps our cities running smoothly."

Importance of Electric Vehicles

The minister stressed the importance of transitioning to electric vehicles, describing it as more than just a technological change. He emphasised that adopting EVs is crucial for reducing pollution in Delhi. "Together, let's make Delhi pollution-free by adopting electric vehicles," he urged.

Gahlot encouraged platform partners to actively participate in this transition. He commended initiatives like EV Bazaar by companies such as Zomato and Blinkit, which aim to raise awareness among gig workers about the benefits of EVs.

Government Support and Initiatives

The Kejriwal government supports the shift to EVs, recognising their environmental and economic advantages. Gahlot assured gig workers that the government stands with them every step of the way in this transition.

During the event, Gahlot interacted with various electric two-wheeler original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). He explored different lease models designed to reduce the upfront cost of EVs, making it easier for delivery partners to switch to electric vehicles.

Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator Scheme

The minister also discussed the recently notified Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme, 2023. This scheme outlines a phased transition to electric vehicles for aggregator fleets.

The scheme mandates that by April 1, 2030, all aggregator fleets must be electric. This marks a significant move towards sustainable urban mobility in Delhi.

Gahlot's speech underscored the commitment of both the government and private sector towards a cleaner, greener future for Delhi. His call to action aims to inspire gig workers and companies alike to embrace electric vehicles for a pollution-free city.
