Delhi MCD Elections 2017: Senior Congress leaders step down from posts after defeat

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi polls has so far turned out to be a nightmare for the Congress party, as three crucial senior leaders announced resignation from posts after the defeat.

New Delhi, April 26: So far three senior Congress leaders have stepped down from their posts after the party's defeat in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections.

Starting with the party, Delhi in-charge P C Chacko on Wednesday announced that he would quit from the post.

When asked about the reason behind his resignation from the post, Chacko said that the party should have an opportunity to put things in order. If failed, we should leave the post.

"I will send my resignation. I will send my resignation to Congress president and vice-president," Chacko told ANI.

Reacting to Delhi former chief minister Sheila Dikshit's remark that Congress did not do an aggressive campaign, he said that she might be right.

'"I haven't seen any aggressive campaign. I think that she should be given opportunity by congress party," Chacko said.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Congress president Ajay Maken also had announced that he would quit from the post.

"I take responsibility for the defeat and I am going to resign as Delhi Congress president. I will not take up any post in the party for one year and will work as a party worker," Maken said to the media.

Then again, senior Congress leader and All India Congress Committee general secretary Gurudas Kamat has quit all posts in the party, according to a statement on Wednesday.

"I had met Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi last week on Wednesday and discussed to be relieved from all responsibilities," he said in a statement, hinting at retirement from active politics.

"I thank Congress president Sonia and Rahul Gandhi for the opportunity given to me to serve the party," he said without elaborating on the reasons for his decision.
