Delhi LG Cracks Down on Revenue Officers in Kanwariya Tents Scam

Lt Governor VK Saxena has ordered strict action against three revenue department officers for alleged gross misconduct in connection with arrangements for Kanwariyas in Delhi.

New Delhi, Jan 17: In a significant development, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has directed strict action against three officers of the revenue department in the Delhi government for alleged gross misconduct in connection with arrangements for Kanwariyas, including tents and other facilities. The revelation was made by Raj Niwas officials on Wednesday.

AAP Government Unaware of Case, Committed to Strict Action

In response to the allegations, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Delhi stated that it was unaware of the specific case. However, the government emphasized its unwavering commitment to taking the most stringent measures against anyone involved in corruption or misconduct.

Chief Secretary Ordered to Take Action Against Officers

Lieutenant Governor Saxena instructed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to initiate strict action against the errant officers, including the then SDM HQ RR Singh, section officer Sanjay Kumar Madan, and junior assistant Anurag. The decision was based on a report submitted by the Vigilance Directorate, which alleged irregularities and potential scam in the awarding of tentage work for Kanwar camps by the caretaking branch of the revenue department.

Allegations of Scam in Tents Allotment

The matter pertains to the allotment of tentage work worth Rs 23.40 crores for Kanwar camps in the city during 2022. A complaint received by the LG Secretariat on July 19, 2022, prompted an investigation into the matter. The chief secretary was directed to submit a factual report on the allegations.

Gross Misconduct by Officials

The report submitted by the Vigilance Directorate highlighted gross misconduct on the part of the three officials. It was found that the work awarded to the bidders was modified without prior approval from the competent authority, resulting in potential financial loss to the government exchequer.

Unapproved Additions to Work Orders

During the inquiry, the revenue department admitted that the caretaking branch did not obtain prior approval to include new items in the work order. These additional items, such as tin shade, side walls, and LED lights, were allegedly inserted into the final document by the three officials without proper authorization.

Major Penalty Proceedings Recommended

In light of the findings, the Vigilance Directorate recommended major penalty proceedings against the three officials involved in the alleged misconduct.

Delhi Government's Stance on Corruption

Responding to the matter, the Delhi government reiterated its firm stance against corruption. The government emphasized its commitment to taking decisive action against any instances of corruption and misconduct, ensuring that those involved are held accountable.

Conclusion

The action taken by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena against the three revenue department officials underscores the government's determination to address allegations of corruption and misconduct. The Delhi government's commitment to taking stringent measures against those involved in such activities further demonstrates its commitment to transparency and accountability in public affairs.
