Delhi Government Slams LG Office for Confusion on Transferred Subjects
The Delhi government recently expressed its dissatisfaction with Lt Governor VK Saxena, criticizing a letter he sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). In this letter, Saxena accused Delhi ministers of neglecting a meeting he convened to discuss their departments' operations following Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's arrest. Kejriwal was detained by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 due to allegations related to a money-laundering case connected to the now-defunct Delhi excise policy and is currently in Tihar jail.

In a sharp retort, the Delhi government highlighted what it perceives as confusion within the LG's office regarding its role concerning the subjects transferred to the AAP government as per India's Constitution. The government pointed out inconsistencies in the LG's office communications to the MHA, particularly regarding the control over transferred subjects like Finance and Water, where it was initially stated that the Lt Governor had no involvement in decisions.
Further exacerbating tensions, the Delhi government accused the LG's office of launching repeated assaults against it. This comes in the wake of the GNCTD Amendment Act 2023, which has raised concerns about an increasingly unaccountable bureaucracy. Despite claims from the LG's office of having no control over certain governmental subjects, questions have been raised about the purpose of seeking meetings to discuss these very topics.
The statement from the Delhi government also called for immediate investigations into officers acting against Delhi citizens' interests, criticizing the LG's office for providing "frivolous excuses" instead of taking tangible action. It emphasized the necessity for decisive measures against officers who ignore ministerial directives and accused the LG of deliberately appointing officers to obstruct new projects and policies.
In conclusion, the Delhi government urged Lt Governor VK Saxena to fulfill his constitutional responsibilities by supporting rather than hindering the work of the elected government. It also appealed for an end to what it described as petty social media commentary on public concerns, highlighting a deepening rift between the state government and the Lieutenant Governor's office.
