Deadly Smog In UP: 2 Lives Lost, Dozens Injured In Highway Pile-Ups

Two bikers lost their lives, and nearly three dozen others were injured in a series of accidents on Tuesday morning in western Uttar Pradesh, as thick smog severely impacted visibility on major highways.

The dangerous fog, which blanketed Noida and surrounding areas, led to multiple collisions, causing chaos on the roads and highlighting the serious risks posed by hazardous air conditions.

Deadly Smog In UP

Agra-Lucknow Expressway Collision

One of the most alarming incidents occurred on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, where a broken-down truck caused a devastating chain reaction. Unable to spot the stalled vehicle due to the dense fog, several drivers collided with the truck, triggering a pile-up. Among the injured, many were rushed to Saifai Medical College and Shikohabad Hospital for treatment. One of the crash victims shared their harrowing experience, recounting that visibility was so poor they couldn't see the vehicles ahead, resulting in a series of crashes.

Eastern Peripheral Expressway Pile-Up

On the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, a similar accident occurred when a truck collided with another in the low visibility conditions, sparking a chain of crashes. A bus traveling from Panipat to Mathura was involved, as it crashed into stationary trucks, injuring around a dozen passengers. The injured were quickly taken to nearby hospitals, while police worked to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow.

Firozabad Crash

In Firozabad, near Agra, a pick-up truck broke down near Nasirpur on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, leading to another pile-up. The fog made it difficult for drivers to notice the stalled vehicle, and six cars, including SUVs, collided as a result. Thankfully, no fatalities were reported, though several individuals sustained injuries.

Other Fatal Accidents

In Bulandshahr, a speeding truck collided with a bike on National Highway-34, killing Mansharam, a Mainpuri resident. Police detained the truck driver after the incident. Another tragic accident took place in Badaun, where an unidentified vehicle struck the bike of Santosh Singh, a teacher commuting to his school in Mau, leading to his death. In the same region, similar accidents injured ten other people.

Hazardous Air Quality in North India

These accidents come as northern India, particularly the National Capital Region (NCR), grapples with "severe plus" levels of air pollution. The dense smog has created a public health crisis, with residents suffering from sore throats, headaches, and difficulty breathing. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors to reduce exposure to the harmful air.

Authorities on High Alert

Local police forces and administration are on high alert as they manage the aftermath of these tragic accidents and continue to monitor the worsening air quality. The combination of poor visibility and hazardous air conditions has made road safety a significant concern in the region, with authorities working tirelessly to address both public health risks and traffic safety challenges.

As the region struggles with these ongoing issues, it is clear that urgent measures are needed to improve both air quality and road safety in the face of such hazardous conditions.
